Quick, Complete, Confident

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a practical extension of the physical exam that enhances clinical decision-making in real time.

This program teaches participants to use next-generation handheld ultrasound as an information-gathering tool—not for definitive diagnosis, but to answer specific clinical questions that guide the next steps in patient care.

Participants will learn to integrate POCUS into both wellness visits and urgent care situations using a focused “yes/no” scanning approach:

Is there free fluid?

Is the bladder distended?

Does the heart appear normal?

Are the organs symmetrical?

This structured method helps identify abnormalities that warrant further investigation, rule out key differentials, and facilitate informed conversations with pet families about diagnostic options. The program covers rapid, whole-body scanning protocols for cats and dogs, including:

Cardiac

Abdominal

Urinary

and Thoracic assessments.

Emphasis is placed on recognizing when findings should prompt additional diagnostics, referral, or immediate intervention, versus when monitoring is appropriate.

Participants will gain confidence using POCUS as a clinical triage tool that bridges the physical examination and advanced diagnostics, enabling shared decision-making with pet families based on enhanced clinical information.
